A Healthier Lifestyle With A Vegan Diet

Date: October 20, 2010

Often times it takes a wake-up call like a heart attack or a stroke to get people to watch what they eat. For some, a lifetime of eating meat has caught up to them and a doctor has told them they must change or else they will die. Some in that predicament turn to a vegan diet. What are the health benefits of a vegan diet? Can it really impact your health and even save your life? Read on..

High blood pressure

The studies all prove that vegans have lower blood pressure than non vegans. Not only that, but when you add meat to a vegan diet it raises blood pressure levels drastically. Those with high blood pressure often look to reduce their sodium intake. A vegan diet is like a low sodium diet.

High cholesterol

A vegan diet will reduce the risk of heart disease because they are low in cholesterol. Vegan diets are low in saturated fat and have little cholesterol due to the lack of animal products. For the most part, we see cholesterol in items like meat, dairy products and eggs. Also, studies have shown that plant protein (as opposed to animal protein) lowers blood cholesterol levels.

To control diabetes a diet that is low in fat and high in complex carbs works wonders. You can find complex carbohydrates in plant foods, not in meat. Since people who suffer from diabetes are at an increased risk for heart disease, a low fat low cholesterol vegan diet would be ideal.
